Pastoral Care

At Gower College Swansea we pride ourselves on the expertise of our tutors and the range of support and guidance we are able to offer through our tutorial scheme.

Every student at Gower College Swansea is allocated a personal tutor who maintains close contact with the student throughout their time with us – from induction on day one all the way along their journey with us on their chosen course, until the time comes for progression onto the next stage, whatever that may be.

Tutorials can be held on a ‘one to one’ basis, with a whole group or a whole Learning Area. They are held weekly and have a designated session on each student’s timetable.

At the start of the academic year it is important that the student is made to feel safe and gains an understanding of the standards expected whilst studying with us. At this stage, tutors deliver specialist tutorials on topics such as safeguarding, Prevent, and several health and wellbeing tutorials such as staying safe online and the dangers of drugs and alcohol, to name but a few.

As the student progresses on their course, their needs change and the focus shifts to more emphasis on one to one tutorials where students are given clear learning objectives and targets that challenge them to fulfil their potential. These targets are formalised twice a year, but also run concurrently throughout their course, and students have access to them via their EILP.

Another important aspect to tutorial is that the student feels supported and this is also an important role of the personal tutor. Not only do tutors have a wealth of experience to draw on, but they also have the back up of other support officers in the college (who cover a range of areas including finance, housing and personal issues) who students may need to access.

The purpose of tutorials at Gower College Swansea is to ensure that students are supported, both academically and personally, in every aspect of college life so that they can focus on excelling in their chosen filed and achieving their goals.

Student Services is the first contact point for information, support and advice on anything from careers advice to financial assistance. Our specialist student support staff are available at Llwyn y Bryn, Tycoch and Gorseinon campuses.
