How to write one

•             Open strongly – in order to grab the tutor’s attention immediately.

•             Relevant skills – make sure you list accomplishments that are relevant.

•             Evidence – back yourself up by giving evidence to support your claims.

•             Sell yourself – there’s no point being modest, you need to look as good as you can, without bragging.

•             Be wary of using humour – you can’t be sure if the tutor shares your sense of humour.

•             Know your limits – remember you only have 4,000 characters or 47 lines to use.

•             Spelling and grammar – remember to read, reread and spellcheck it.

•             Be truthful – make sure you write an honest description of yourself.

•             Make it a good read – whilst keeping it truthful, you also want the tutor to enjoy reading it.

•             Write it yourself – UCAS has plagiarism software which checks if every statement is unique.

•             Remember – you can only write one personal statement even if you’re applying for different courses.
